Commercial Restroom Design

Some commercial restrooms are becoming full room compartments. These compartments attempt to fill spaces and gaps to meet the need for privacy concerns. Filling these areas may require special hardware. One method is to use a post and rail system. Another method is to use full room compartments. When the restroom goes into full operation, occupancy indicators can also assist users in determining if someone else may be using a stall.

Another technique is to stack modular panels with dowels. This allows for adequate light and ventilation. It is important to make sure that any strobe lights are not blocked by the enclosure. Using these partitions can take hours, instead of days for installation. In addition, these partitions are half the cost of brick and mortar. Installation time is hours instead of days.

Some of the most popular restroom partition materials are metal/stainless steel and hollow core. Some hollow core material is comprised of cardboard. This can lead to musty odors and problems with mold and rust. On the other hand, hollow core is the least expensive and if scratched can be repaired with less expense.

Another material a little more expensive than hollow core is plastic laminate. If chipped, some plastic laminate partitions may expose a wood core that is prone to mold issues. Another issue is that plastic laminate is not recyclable. Similar issues are apparent with wood partitions.

Phenolic (black core) material is a glued material with a case or covering. Sometimes the material may be sourced overseas in areas without applicable standards, leading to possible adverse health effects. Phenolic has many layers and is durable for heavy use. However, the single layer outside is susceptible to vandalism. Phenolic is also non-recyclable.

Plastic or solid surface is yet another material used for restroom partitions. Solid surface resists molds and hides scratches. This material cuts like plywood. Solid surface may also have no VOCs and is recyclable. If solid surface is grinded and heated, a similar material is produced from the input to the output of the process. It resists the effects of vandalism because paint and stickers don’t stick to the surface. Some of the most environmentally friendly solid surface material is under GREENGUARD Certification.
