Interior Design KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)
Interior Design KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)

Each company has a unique set of KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) that it uses to measure the effectiveness of different strategies in that organization. Regardless of the selected KPIs pertinent to a particular organization, the interior design of the spaces used in an organization may affect these KPIs. Therefore, managers should pay special attention to interior design. Using interior design as a strategy could be the key to improving and enhancing the goals set for KPIs.

A company has to identify and categorize KPIs before implementing a strategic plan. This allows them to review the KPIs. While reviewing the KPIs, the company can try to resolve any risks. Then strategic improvements can be set in place according to a specific timeline. Including interior design can be an important part of this performance management activity.

This can be done by taking stock of the current state of the interior design. Was the office recently remodeled? Is it in desperate need of an update? Is there a budget for these improvements? Although KPIs will vary based on the organization, interior design will continue to have a direct and/or indirect effect on some common types of KPIs.

KPIs can be categorized into various types. Some of these are marketing, financial, operating, and human resources. For retail stores and offices that have regular customer visits, the interior design delivers a brand message. This message can enhance or conflict with the overall brand message of the organization. If it enhances the brand message, this can have a positive impact on customer acquisition cost, making it easier to secure and close an important contract. Do you have spaces in your company to showcase your product, deliver a presentation, or greet the customer? These are all places that comprise your marketing strategy.

Because interior design can have an effect on customer acquisition, it also has an effect on sales volume. A customer may become more comfortable in doing business with your company after visiting your physical location. This effect may be more indirect, but the physical facilities will leave an impression on your customer. A positive impression will have only positive effects on financial KPIs.

Your interior design will tend to have a more direct outcome on your company’s operations. Interior design is not just a visual consideration. The layout of your retail space or office will affect both the customer and employee experience. Can your customer easily locate products in your retail store? Do they feel lost and confused while trying to find a product? What about your employees? Can they find the products themselves while attempting to help the customer? Are there spaces in your office that support customer service, collaborative, and other functions? If your office is in a warehouse without visiting customer, does the layout help improve the operational KPIs by making it easier for the workers to locate and place products?

The layout of the space can also have an influence on human resources. Employee recruitment and retention could be directly affected by the layout and overall feeling of your office. Studies have shown that employees prefer certain types of spaces, such as having natural light, versus other spaces without these qualities. The aesthetics and amenities in your company may influence employees in their decision to join or stay with your company, leading to lower employee turnover.

Whatever KPIs that you identify for your organization, these KPIs will fall into one or more of the categories of marketing, financial, operational, and human resources. Interior Design heavily impacts all of these categories. How can your company measure the impact of interior design?
